Data regions

Swyvl stores your files in the region you choose when creating your organisation. This affects where data is physically stored at rest and where it is processed.

Choosing a region

Performance — Choose the region geographically closest to where your team uploads files and where your clients view them. Closer regions mean faster upload and download speeds.

Compliance — If your organisation or your clients have data residency requirements (e.g. GDPR requires EU storage, certain government contracts require Australian storage), select the appropriate region.

Sovereignty — Files in the AU region are stored exclusively on Australian infrastructure and are never transferred to other regions.

Caution

Your data region is set at organisation creation and cannot be changed. If you need to move to a different region, you would need to create a new organisation and re-upload your files. Contact support if you need help with this.

Data residency

Files are stored in object storage (Wasabi) in the selected region. Wasabi provides:

• ISO 27001 certified infrastructure
• SOC 2 Type II compliant storage
• 11 nines (99.999999999%) data durability
• No egress fees — download costs are always $0

What stays in your region

• Original uploaded files
• Generated thumbnails and tile derivatives
• Processing output (metadata, classified viewer configs)

What may leave your region

• File metadata (filename, size, type, capture date) — stored in Supabase PostgreSQL, which runs on AWS in the same geographic region
• Thumbnail previews — served via a CDN edge (no original data leaves your region)

GDPR

For EU-region organisations, all file data is stored in Frankfurt (Germany). Swyvl’s data processing is covered by our Data Processing Agreement (DPA). Contact privacy@swyvl.io to request a DPA.

Australian Privacy Act

For AU-region organisations, file data is stored in Sydney. Swyvl complies with the Australian Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs).
